JOHN W. SMITH

John W. Smith, who had attained to the advanced age of 88 years, died Monday  morning at 1:30 o'clock.  The decedent was born in Switzerland but had made his home in Logan county for the past 58 years, being one of the early settlers in Postville.  He continued to make his home in the west side until hisdeath.

The decedent was born in the canton on Aarat, Switzerland, Oct. 19, 1823. He came to America when ten years of age, making the trip with his parents who located at Jackson, O.  They settled in Sangamon county.  There, John W. Smith was married to Allie Kessner in 1851, and two years later came to Postville,  since making his home here, his business being that of plasterer, which he continued up to the time that his infirmities compelled him to desist from work.

He is survived by his wife and ten children.  The latter are: Mrs. Frances  Ogilivie, Middletown; Mrs. Sarah Maston, Peoria; Mrs. Elizabeth Patterson,  Dallas City, Ill,; Marion Smith, Sherman Smith, Samuel Smith, Charles Smith, Mrs. Allie Sheeley, Louis Smith and Frank Smith of this city.  Three children,  Rachel, Oria and Harry, died some years ago.

The funeral is to be at 10 a. m. Wednesday, probably at the Lincoln Hill church, but this will be announced Tuesday.
