DOWNING CEMETERY

Downing Cemetery is located in Section 33, Chester Township, Logan County, Illinois. The land for the cemetery was donated by Samuel Downing [middle name unknown despite his new stone] after his wife Mary Matthews Day Downing died in May 1847. There were four earlier burials on the site. The cemetery was recorded by Pamela Erlenbush and Janice Endrizzi and transcribed by Cheryl Rothwell – all great great great granddaughters of Samuel and Mary.

Please note that, as with all cemetery listings, the row numbers are arbitrary and created for convenience in locating the stones. They are NOT official cemetery numbers. Assumed information is from Logan County, Illinois, Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol. II, The Decatur Genealogical Society, 1969. That transcription was done by the late Dalen Shellhammer, a descendant of John Downing [another Logan County Downing line which DNA testing now indicates is related to Samuel Downing] and a genealogist in the area for over 50 years.

I have skipped the stones which just say mother or father.
