EARLIEST RECORDS IN ILLINOIS COUNTIES

Keeping vital records was encouraged but not mandated by the State of Illinois prior to 1916. Consequently, while counties have marriage records back to their formation -- unless there was a courthouse fire -- they do not have birth and death records. This document, from the Illinois State Archives, provides the earliest date for each kind of record by county. Remember, prior to 1916, not even birth or death was recorded even if the county was keeping such records. The date is the earliest date ANY record of that kind exists in the county.
