Mrs. Nettie Alice Birks, wife of W. E. Birks, residing on North Lafayette Street, Mt. Pulaski, Illinois, who had been in failing health the past few years, passed away at the Decatur and Macon County hospital in Decatur, Illinois, at 10:30 o'clock Wednesday morning, June 7, 1933, aged 66 years, 8 months and 8 days. Death was caused from cancer. Mrs. Birks accompanied her husband to the south and spent several winters in the hope that her health would be benefitted. She underwent several surgical operations, but all to no avail, and she quickly answered the final summons and all earthly suffering.
Nettie Alice Scroggin was born in Mt. Pulaski vicinity on September 29, 1866, being a daughter of Alfred C. and Sarah France Scroggin. She spent all her life in or near Mt. Pulaski. On March 22, 1887, she was united in marriage to W. Edward Birks, who survives her. Two sons preceded their mother in death, David Lynn Birks, who died in infancy, and William Alfred Birks, who passed away thirteen years ago. Besides her husband, she is survived by one daughter, Helen, wife of Elmer E. Allspach, living about nine miles southwest of Mt. Pulaski, and two sons, George Birks, at home, and John M. Birks, of Peoria, Illinois. There are also five grandchildren; one brother, Oran O. Scroggin, and one sister, Mrs. B. H. Keck, of Mt. Pulaski.
Mrs. Birks lived on the farm nine miles southwest of Mt. Pulaski until recent years, when she moved into Mt. Pulaski to lead a retired life, with her devoted husband looking after her every care and want, providing every comfort possible during her illness.
