Esther Jane Buckles Dies at Age of Seventy-Six Years, Leaving Many Descendants

Esther Jane Buckles, the wife of John Buckles, one of the prominent residents of this county, died at her home in Mt. Pulaski at 2:30 o'clock Thursday morning. Mrs. Buckles was advanced in years when she breathed her last, having been born in 1828. For the 76 years of her life, she has resided in Logan county, having begun and ended her existence in the neighborhood where her parents lived before her.

Mrs. Buckles' maiden name was Esther Jane Scroggin, she being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carter Scroggin, pioneer settlers in this county. She came of a prominent family in the history of this county and in her marriage became allied with a family which has an enviable name in the records of the county's affairs.

To the deceased and her husband were born four children, three sons and a daughter. The latter, the daughter, passed away years ago, while the three sons are still living, in this county, in the vicinity of Mt. Pulaski. The sons are Elias, John B. and Darius Buckles, all of whom are married and are the heads of fine families. In the loss of Mrs. Buckles, the county loses another of its pioneer citizens and mothers, the mothers who reared the sons who made the county one of the finest in the state, and who are an honor to the soil of the state.

The funeral service will take place at the Christian church at 11 o'clock a.m. Sunday, in Mt. Pulaski. Burial in Steenbergen cemetery.
