After a lingering illness dating from last January, Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Copeland passed to her final rest and reward last Friday, July 26 from the family home in this city. Deceased was a daughter of Robert and Mary Buckles, who were among the earliest settlers in this part of Illinois. She was born at their farm home a few miles from Mt. Pulaski hill on May 3, 1824, twelve years before any white man located on the hill, and at her death was 77 years, 2 months, and 23 days old. She was one of nineteen children: William R., Jeremiah B., John, Elizabeth Ann, Levina, Andrew, Peter, Chalton C., Mary, Robert, Wiley, Henry H., Sarah J., Elmira, and Lucinda M. Buckles, all but six of whom preceded her to the great beyond.
The deceased was united in marriage to Samuel M. Copeland on March 15, 1840. To them were born twelve children: Amos of Oxford, Kansas; Robert, Jacob, Abraham, and Mary M. of Mt. Pulaski; Sarah E. of Niantic; Louvina Jane of Mt. Pulaski; Lydia Ann of Cornland; Andrew and Almira of Mt. Pulaski; Laura G. of Cornland, and Sherman. Jacob, Abraham, and Sherman died in infancy, but the other nine are living and all were present at the venerable mother's funeral.
Mrs. Copeland identified herself with the Christian church in 1869, and was ever after a devout follower of the Lord until death claimed her. Funeral services were held in the Christian church at 10 a.m. Sunday, conducted by Elder S. Elwood Fisher of Maroa, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Steenbergen Cemetery, besides those of her husband, who died August 12, 1897. The pallbearers, all grandchildren of Mrs. Copeland, were Claude Jones, Amos Van Hook, Henry Van Hook, Omar Copeland, Frank Bell, and Allen Gasaway.
