FUNERAL FOR JULIUS MENZEL HELD TODAY

The funeral services for the late Julius Menzel who was killed so tragically at the East mine last Saturday were held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home at 1006 Davenport street. The miners attended in a body as did the Red Men and Odd Fellows lodges, both of which lodges Menzel was a member of. There was a large crowd at the house to pay their last respects to the deceased. The funeral was in charge of Rev. Hoffman of the St. John's church of this city. Burial was in Union cemetery.

Julius was born Oct. 1, 1883, in Germany, and came to America at the early age of 4 years. His parents immediately moved to Lincoln where they have resided ever since. His mother preceding him in death by 3 years.

The deceased attended the public schools of Lincoln and at an early age started to work in the mine. In 1911 he married Carrie Jaggi of this city, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Jaggi. To this union two children Harry, aged 16 months.

In 1908 he became a member of the Lincoln police force and served faithfully for 6 years when he resigned to take up work in the mine again. He had worked in the mine for four years up to the time of his death.

Besides his father, wife and children, he is survived by the following brothers and sisters; Herman Menzel, U.S. army in France; Mrs. Frank Knecht, Lincoln, Ill.; Mrs. Harry Merry, Lincoln, Ill.; Mrs. Joseph Baugh, Chicago, Ill.;Mrs. James Pierce, San Francisco, Cal.; Mrs. Warweck, San Francisco, Cal.;Mrs. Clifford Musick, Lincoln, Ill.

William P. Cashen, pit boss, who was severely injured in the fall of slate that cause Menzel's death, was suffering at St. Clara hospital today from badly broken left ankle and a crushed right arm. It may not be possible to save the foot, although physicians are doing everything possible to save the member.
