RUSSELL SCROGGIN

A telegram was received today from Crown Point, Ind., announcing the death of Russell Scroggin, formerly a Logan County citizen but of late years a resident of Portsmouth, Iowa. The deceased was a son of Russell Scroggin of Mt. Pulaski, brother of L. K. Scroggin, and for many years was a cashier in the First National Bank at Mt. Pulaski. The germs of consumption took root and Mr. Scroggin went to Iowa, where he started a bank, afterwards reorganizing it as a state bank and serving as cashier. The physicians of that place gave up hope and he was sent to Colorado, but to no avail. He then placed himself under the care of the Chinese physician at Crown Point, but no good resulted and death came as a relief at 8:15 this morning. He leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. The deceased was an uncle of Mrs. A. G. Drobisch and a cousin of Mrs. A. L. Anderson. Nothing is known of the funeral arrangements.

Lincoln News, 10 January 1898

The funeral of Russell Scroggin was held Sunday morning at 10 o'clock at Mt. Pulaski. In spite of the inclement weather, a large concourse of people was present to pay a last tribute to the dead. The Modern Woodmen of America, Mt. Pulaski, attended in a body. Rev. Dabney had charge of the services and, after a beautiful sermon, the remains were taken to the Steenbergen Cemetery and laid to rest beside the sleeping mother.
