REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERANS
BURIED IN LOGAN COUNTY


Seven Revolutionary War veterans are buried in Logan County, Illinois, They served in various capacities for various lengths of time in various locations during the American War of Independence. Then they went home and began the trek west, pioneers in the expanding nation they fought to create. Eventually they came to Logan County. In most cases they have descendants still living in the county as well scattered around the country. Logan did not become a county until 1839 so most of these veterans came to what was then Sangamon. For ease we are referring to it as Logan County, regardless of when they arrived.


JOHN DOWNING - Bowers Templeman

John Downing was born in Maryland where he served as Private 5th Class, Captain Basil Williams Company, 2nd Battalion, Washington County, Maryland Militia, before traveling to Ohio and then to Illinois with his extended family, arriving in Logan County in 1821 to make the first permanent settlement in the Salt Creek country. He died December 18, 1838, and is buried at Bowers Templeman.

HENRY KIME - Zion

Henry Kime was born in North Carolina. He served in the Chester County Militia in 1780, 1781 and 1782. He later lived Indiana and was living with his daughter in Logan County, then Sangamon, when he died August 22, 1833. He is buried at Zion.

ABRAHAM LUCAS - Steenbergen

Abram/Abraham Lucas was a spy. He went from New Jersey, through Pennsylvania and Ohio, arriving in central Illinois by 1825 and in Logan County in 1828. He bought land in Lake Fork Township. He died July 22, 1841, and is buried at Steenbergen.

HENRY LANTIS - Reed

Henry Lantis was born in April 6, 1764, in Frederick County, Pennsylvania. He came to Logan County and settled in the Sugar Creek settlement about 1824. He die Decemeber 22, 1841, in Tazewell County and was buried at Reed Cemetery.

JOHN MUSICK - Musick

John Musick is believed to be buried in Musick Cemetery, Logan County, although no marker remains. He served in Captain Burney's Company of Colonel Francis Taylor's Virginia Convention Guards Regiment in Virginia guarding prisons taken at Saratoga.

WILLIAM PATTERSON - Downing

William Patterson served in the Revolutionary War in Pennsylvania, lived in Ohio and came came to Logan County. He died March 16, 1840, and was buried at Downing Cemetery.

HUMPHREY SCROGGIN - Steenbergen

Humphrey Scroggin was from South Carolina. He served at the Battle of Guildford Court House and was at the siege of Yorktown. He came with his family to Logan County, settling in Mt. Pulaski Township. He is believed to be buried in Caryle Cemetery. There is a marker in Steenbergen but it is for his grandson, also Humphrey.

JAMES TURLEY - Carlyle

James Turley was one of the first settlers of the area that became Logan County. He served three tours, the first time when he was 16 years of age. He was at the Battle of Germantown. He arrived in Logan County in 1820 and bought land in Mt. Pulaski Township. He died June 4, 1836, and is believed to be buried at Carlyle, originally known as the Turley Burial Ground. No marker remains.
